  • What is the difference between Mender Professional and Mender Enterprise?

Mender Professional is delivered as Software-as-a-Service with a secure Mender server we host for you. It includes advanced features and best-effort support.

Mender Enterprise has the same advanced features as Professional plus additional premium features that address the risk, efficiency, security and uptime needs of enterprises. With Mender Enterprise you can also choose between the hosted or on-premise Mender server. Enterprise also comes with guaranteed SLA response time and premium support.

  • How do the plans differ between hosted and on-premise for Mender Enterprise?

The on-premise Enterprise plan allows you to run Mender anywhere: private cloud (your own datacenter and Kubernetes), or a public cloud provider (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure), or on top of Kubernetes engines like Amazon EKS, Google Kubernetes Engine.

The hosted Enterprise plan allows you to use the secure Mender server we host for you, avoiding the need for the expertise or associated costs of running a server and IT infrastructure.

  • What is a Mender add-on package?

Mender offers optional packages called add-ons packages that offer features for solving additional device management use cases, such as troubleshooting and configuration management.

  • Do I have to buy the additional add-on features?

Absolutely not. Add-ons are optional, and customers have the flexibility to opt in and opt out of the add-on packages they want on their plan.

  • How do I sign up for the add-on packages?

Whether you are a new or existing customer, you can opt in to purchase an add-on package through the hosted Mender UI, or by contacting us.

  • How does pricing work for add-on packages?

  • Do I need to install anything to use/test an add-on?

Most add-ons will likely require additional device software to be installed. Check the add-on documentation page for more details.

  • Can I evaluate the add-on features for free?

Yes. As part of the hosted Mender free trial version, you can evaluate all the latest features of Mender including everything in Mender Enterprise and all add-on features. You can sign up for free here.

  • What makes a device count against the device limit?

Technically, only accepted devices are counted against the device limit. You can see all your accepted devices under Devices -> Device Groups in the UI. Devices in other authorization states, such as Pending, Pre-authorized or Rejected do not count against the device limit.

  • Are there any additional fees?

No, as long as your usage is not excessive (e.g. your devices checking for updates every 5 seconds is considered excessive) you only pay the monthly price, the same every month for the same device limit.

  • How do I know what my device limit is and if I am getting close to it?

Simply log into your account and you will see your current amount of accepted devices and your current limit in the top bar of the UI.

You will also receive an email notification once you reach 80% of your limit and 100% of your limit to make sure you are aware of it and can take appropriate action.

  • What happens if I reach my device limit?

You will no longer be able to accept new devices into your account. You can request an increase by contacting us before this happens to avoid any disruption. You can however decommission or reject existing devices to accept new devices. Regardless, your devices are never “lost”, they will regularly retry authorization with the server, so they can be accepted later.

You will receive an email once you reach 80% of your limit so you can take action before reaching your limit.

  • How does the device limit work if I am only using the API?

The same case as the UI still applies, but instead of getting an error in the UI, the API response for accepting a new device will fail with an error response.

  • Can I preauthorize an arbitrary amount of devices?

Yes. However, once the devices connect for the first time, they will try to become accepted and count against the device limit. If the limit is reached at this point, the devices will fail to become accepted.

  • What is the 'best-effort' support for Mender Professional?

While there would be no formalized agreement to deliver a specific level of support, our staff would provide our best-effort which is subject to staff availability.

  • What is the SLA-support level for Mender Enterprise?

Support for Mender Enterprise is a formalized agreement including coverage hours, response times and target resolution times. We can tailor support contracts based on our customer's needs. Contact us to see what we can offer you.
